A Blast from the Past

This week 5 and 10 years ago.

The first article from the archives is about the search for some meaning at Christmas as the nation
continued to splurge
in late 2006 and the other article from that week about the state of the roads.

This week ten years ago, on the eve of the introduction of the Euro, the 2001 article was highlighting that without Sterling, the Euro for Ireland made little sense.

On the topic of splurging – one of these last revisited articles concentrated on Irish people spurging on shopping trips to New York with wild abandon about 5 years ago.

I was sat here in Brasil watching TV the other day and there was a TV news/lifestyle piece on the newest horde of international invaders of the big apple for Xmas – Brazilians! And they are spending on shopping. The statistics were announced ( with lots of feel good pride) that Brazilians were the third largest group of forgeigners there this year and they were living out their ( american? ) dreams of white christmases and cheap designer shopping sprees. New York was clearly courting them.

It was like a nasty case of deja-vu for me.

Its still the very well off that go here. It hasnt descended to the lunacy of Ireland 5 years ago yet…
