During the weekend I was reminded that the Catholic Church (and Europe) was involved in a questionable system known as indulgences. It strikes me that when we Europeans buy/pay for Carbon Credits (about €13 per tonne currently) this big pot of money (370m ‘indulgences’ bought by Europe to date) is sent to far away places such as Russia & China for projects to offset our polluting sins. We continue to ‘sin’ but this modern system of indulgences helps us deal with the guilt. Should we even fell guilty? Time for a modern Martin Luther to wake Europe up? Our conscience costs and can we afford to pay while others move ahead?
