As the reality of the recession / depression that is about to engulf Ireland takes hold, we have scenarios playing out where insiders of all sorts man the heavy artillery to ensure that their margins are protected and that the weakest party (the consumer) loses out.

Not just banks. Oh no. MNC supermarkets. And Irish farmers. Instead of pushing down more resolutely on the intermediary vultures, instead the Irish clientelist collaborators that our ruling political classes are (all shades), they'll have you and me pay for their inaction. If, unlike me, you shop where you shouldn't and fail to cut the legs out from under those that damage you and yours........

http://www.businessandleadership.com/news/article/20018/battle-of-the-giants

So the National Consumer Agency is muddying the waters and perhaps making a bad situation worse (for the consumer, not for the multiples). So who are these bastions of Irish life? http://www.nca.ie/eng/About/Board/

Every little helps. ............if you're a Tesco shareholder that is. Good defensive share and longterm keeper, buckos. Irish bonds you say? Fetch me my cut-throat razor would you?

Jonathan Hannon, I personally like to see things from different angles and the more the better. I don't have an opinion about most of the topics that is discussed so I keep my mouth shut. Like the George Lee drama and now Déirdre de Búrca resignation. All I know is that it is a good development that will shake the existing establishment, system and culture.

Thanks a million. Its great to know people actually read your stuff. i'm deeply imbedded in the political scene in Galway but not a member of any party. This is is a great forum and people have great things to say. We need to start taking idea's out of here and stop bemoaning the system. In reference to the knowledge economy, I met the NUI Galway research officer this morning to publicise some of the work their doing. There inspiring, amazing, dedicated and carrying out the most amazin research. These people are the future, not the likes of Biffo spouting on about fundamentals and smart economy claptrap that he understands nothing about. We need to find some positivity. Thanks again for the kind words.

Furrylugs, the George Lee issue is not trivial - it goes directly to the very heart of our political problem.

To be honest I am surprised George Lee is still discussed here.
I was looking for a break from it all in the media and watch a neutral and relaxing program like Nationwide.
I am disappointed however, to watch the report on an architect. A very successful architect with many outstanding work. However, I do think it is very tasteless in these hard financial times for so many families to report on all that glamour and exclusive design work. There is an abundance of programs already dedicating and concentrating to such luxurious, holywood-type lifestyles and this report doesn't do Nationwide any good.
This particular report is too blatantly obvious of an advertisement for the architect. The example of his work shown in this report were way beyond an average house hold can ever afford.

This report is an insult and an assault to many many (young) families in dire financial trouble.
