It has been said that politics is the second oldest profession. I have learned that it bears a striking resemblance to the first.

Ronald Reagan

A recession is when your neighbour loses his job, a depression is when you lose your job, recovery is when Brian Cowen loses his job.

Philip,

You are 100% correct, but, we do live in hope.

FG do not want to take over, because they haven't a bogs what to do, just more parish pump politicians. The Greens are hanging in there for their pensions, they are just like a packet of Silk Cut Light, they are still bad, despite all the fancy packaging.

"Reminds me however of that Hollyhead boat in the 1980s which had labourers off to Kilburn on one side and graduate students on the other, all mixed in to a strange fate of poverty, each were however determined to maintain their status by ignoring the others existence.
It’ll be the middle classes mostly on that emigration boat now."

This is so true, my brothers were on that boat, one a stone mason, the other a doctor, but they both had to leave Ireland to find work, neither of them came back, well maybe for the odd holiday, but thats it.

Philip, the €1.5 trillion is company/corporate (non-financial) debt, according to Roubini; not workers' mortgages.

If the fundamentals were good like in Canada then I would be a buyer.

Never catch a falling knife because prices can always keep going lower and when a company issues its first profit warning, it will issue a second and third.

Finance is all about making money and keeping it and also in hedging your wealth.

Remeber the saying: A fool and his money.

Irish are great wafflers and hurlers on the ditch. Good bloggers as well.

Nothing will happen.

120K people marched representing the unions and PS mostly. Ho hum...nothing happened. Dail passed the motion for the pension levy by a majority of 10 - despite the rumblings of one FF backbencher. Now David Begg...another guy used to sitting on boards as well...says that unions will have to resort to more traditional methods...dearie me! to do what? These guys are going to bunk off for the day?... it will not be noticed. The PS and unions are in lah lah land. And before PS people mention the 1,5gazillion issue in the private sector...remember, PS are part of that - a PS worker on 80K will likely have a mortgage of 300K. Every penny spent by PS in the economy causes 5-10 times the activity which ultimately gets used for financing loans (multiply by 3-5 again!). PS and Private are inextricably linked and should not be turned into a them and us. There are lots of quibbles, but not of any importance. We need to move on!

I say again, nothing will happen. Greens hang on for dear life and FG and Labour are sitting pretty as they are - why rock the boat? - they need da money lads to pay their own debts! Hang on for 3-4 years and Obama will save us all... Live is easy and leave poor Cowen in the doo doo. Serves him right. Can you imagine how comfortable Gilmore and Kenny are ...turning up every day watching a roasting. They are still not bored. Why would they want that crap of leading. Lorcan's point on us being drunk on eazy peazy laisser faire is all too correct.

I had hoped for a re-activation of the pulpit broadcasting system by an outraged Catholic Church that was so well used in the referendums of yore. But they seem happy as well. Maybe, though, since a lot of ye are atheists, they probably see this as payback time ;)

The only thing that will cause real change will be a jolt of some sort. It'll be a defining event that will change the political and social landscape forever. Perhaps a show of solidarity among people on the lines of what happened 20 years ago in Poland? Maybe a blockade for a week---something that'll profoundly frighten these idiots out of their Dail slumber.

because most people follow the herd and get slaughtered with the rest of the sheep.

I'm not in poverty because of the following:
1 I did not follow the heard into buying very expensive house at ridiculous high prices
2 I saw things starting to go tits up and so I shorted the market where the herd bought in because they believed in the lies the governments were telling them. I did not believe them
3 We are now already in a Depression and its getting deeper but the majority of people will go into denial instead of developing plans to protect there wealth.

If you dont have the stomack to short the market or any stocks then I would suggest in buying Gold mining shares as they were the best performers in the 1929 stock market crash. Remember the Dow is already down more than 50% and its still falling. I reckon the Dow will loose 80% of its value in total.

Also all commodity prices except for Gold is falling which is very strange because with all the interest rate cutting and quantitive easing (printing money) then the commoditys should be going higher as they would be signalling higher inflation but instead they are signalling deflation.

If people do not act to protect there wealth they are going to be very sorry and remeber the banks are not going to do that for people. Alot of peoples pensions are going to be down over 50% or more and all that money is lost. I urge people to wake up and protect yourself and family its still not too late as there is more pain to come.
